Architect’s indulgence or a meaningful political statement?
The external appearance of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) building, completed around 2001, designed by ARM, is a black finished facsimile of the white finished Villa Savoye designed by Le Corbusier.
Apparently some critics dubbed this part of the AITSIS building the “evil twin”.
The depth of the cultural references are paint thin. However, the built replica tests the adage of “form follows function”.
Note to myself: You must get out more..15 years late on this one 🙂
