We left the tropical north a few years ago and made our home  in Wombat country. In that time, I have driven past 5 road-kill wombats, patted one live orphaned wombat at our local cafe, and seen one mange stricken adult in the forest. Some record for an area celebrating the Wombat.

The recent sudden growth of our sleepy hamlet, which we have been part of, places the area’s unique nature under pressure. How our bucolic hamlet develops into a suburban satellite town will depend on the social values that the community retains through its public will, and the extent of financial opportunism taken by the few.
