Backyard battles continue

October 30, 2017

The absence of our long time currawong has led to territory disputes in the bird kingdom. A raven family has taken up ownership and stalks our garden. The raven nest is up high in a nearby gum tree.

A solitary kookaburra hangs around the backyard attracting the ire of the ravens. They squabble viciously, the kookaburra giving little ground, shuffling from branch to branch, until the raven’s partner joins in. This dispute is currently at a standoff, repeating itself daily over the past week.

Currawong occasionally visit, tentative, always with an eye on danger. They seem to attract the ire of wattle birds. Another nest nearby it seems. So the it goes.

My doodle of one of the morning dramas in the rainy, overcast sky. A small wattle bird chases a currawong from its nest.
